Tips for Choosing Your Wedding Invitations

Start Early:  You may think you have plenty of time to choose your wedding invitations.  However, once you start looking around and doing research you will soon find the possibilities are endless as are prices and turnaround times.  The very best advice is to start early and do your homework.  You will definitely want to avoid a last minute "must decide now" situation.  You want your choice of invitation to be a good decision that reflects the personalities of the bride and groom as well as the feel of the wedding.

Start With Your Wedding Theme:  When it comes to choosing your wedding invitations, you must start with your wedding theme.  It wouldn't make any sense at all to invite your guests to an elegant wedding with an invitation full of cutesy cartoons.  Think about the overall look and feel you want for your wedding.  Take the time to "sketch" a picture of your wedding by writing down the general look and feel of your wedding along with the inspiration you are using for your wedding.  This will be a great help when it comes to choosing your wedding invitations.

Involve The Stakeholders:  Before beginning your search for wedding invitations, determine who the stakeholders are.  For some couples this will be the bride's parents.  For others, it will be the bride and her mom and for some it will be the couple themselves.  It is very important to know who has "veto power" prior to the production of your invitations.  Nothing could be worse than to pick up your invitations only to find the wedding invitation wording had been changed without your knowledge by the person or persons responsible for funding the wedding.

Wedding Invitation Styles

When it comes to choosing the style of your wedding invitations, the sky is the limit!  You can choose a classic traditional style, a funky modern style, a fun and casual style or something totally unique to you and your wedding.  Below you will find example of several different styles of wedding invitations.  However, you are limited only by your budget and imagination.

DIY Or Professionally Printed:

When trying to decide if you want do it yourself wedding invitations or professionally printed wedding invitations, you should first consider 3 things:

  1. Why do you want to do it yourself?
  2. Do you have the proper equipment?
  3. Do you REALLY have the time to do it yourself?

The answer to question #1 is the most crucial.  If the answer is "to save money," then the suggestion would be move on to the next two questions.  As a general rule, you will only save between $1 and $2 per invitation by doing it yourself.  If you factor in that you may need a better printer, specialized software, and special paper along with the time involved in designing, testing, printing and assembling your invitations, the cost savings may not be as appealing.  It may be much less stressful to to have your invitations professionally printed and look for cost savings in another area of your budget.  If you do choose to do it yourself, below are some helpful links.
